Use Of Ict In Teaching And Learning Of English Language
Chapter one
Introduction:
1.1 Background of the Study
Globalisation and technical advancements have expedited teaching. Over the last fifteen years, a new global economy has emerged, “powered by technology, fuelled by information, and driven by knowledge”.
The rise of this new global economy has major consequences for the character and purpose of educational institutions. The half-life of information continues to diminish, while access to knowledge grows rapidly. The school cannot continue to be as vocal about its objective of providing a specific set of facts.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT), which encompasses radio, television, computers, and the internet, has been identified as potentially powerful. Communication technology is a tool used to appropriately capture information for effectiveness in many aspects of life.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many stakeholders in the educational sector have expressed genuine concern about the reduction in the value of education, deterioration in manpower training, laxity in teaching and learning, and a lack of instructional materials in the Ministry of Education.
1. Some schools do not use ICT effectively in teaching and learning.
2. Due to a shortage of funding, some schools are unable to purchase ICT equipment for teaching and learning.
3. Some teachers lack the necessary training to use ICT in the classroom.
4. Due to a lack of quality, teachers adulterate students, presenting a barrier to their learning and development. This is the researcher’s right to examine schools in Enugu North in order to determine whether they have used ICT and recorded success, and if not, what the explanation is.
1.3 Significance of the Study
This study is very important to utilise since it helps to detect the impact of information and communication technologies on the teaching and learning of the English language.
The researchers anticipated that if the suggested and personal opinions proposed in this research work are implemented effectively and diligently, the negative image of information and communication technology on English language teaching and learning will be restored, and the goal of introducing information and communication technology will be met.
Thus, the research will assist the following groups of people: the government, parents, society, schools, and English-language students.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The primary goal of the study is to determine the challenges that teachers experience while using ICT and whether it has a beneficial impact on teaching and learning English. Specifically, the study aims to discover the following.
1) To what extent do teachers confront hurdles when adopting ICT?
2) To what extent have society and the government recognised the importance of ICT in teaching and learning?
3) To what extent can ICT positively impact teaching and learning?
4) How serious are the issues linked with the usage and application of ICT in research?
1.5 Research Question.
As a result of the explicit explanation of the objective of the research, the following critical research questions are raised to help guide the study:
1) What challenges do instructors confront while adopting ICT?
2) To what extent do society and the government recognise the importance of ICT in teaching and learning?
3) Does ICT have a good impact on teaching and learning?
4) What are the issues surrounding the usage and use of ICT in research?
1.6 Limitations of the Study
In Enugu state and throughout Nigeria, there are several schools owned by both the government and individuals.
Due to time constraints and restricted resources, the research is confined to only schools in Enugu North.
