USE OF ICT IN TEACHING AND LEARNING OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Globalisation and technical advancements have hastened the education process. Over the last fifteen years, a new global economy “powered by technology, fuelled by information, and driven by knowledge” has emerged.

The emergence of this new global economy has major ramifications for educational institutions’ character and purpose. As information’s half-life continues to diminish, access to information grows dramatically. School cannot continue to be a more vocal mission of a prescribed set of facts.

Technology of Information and Communication Radio, television, computers, and the internet have all been identified as potentially strong forms of ICT. Communication technology is a tool used to appropriately capture information for effectiveness in any area of life.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBEM
Many stakeholders in the educational sector have expressed genuine concern about the deterioration in the value of education, the reduction in personnel training, laxity in teaching and learning, and a shortage of instructional materials in the ministry of education.

1. Some schools fall short in their use of ICT in teaching and learning.

2. Some schools are unable to purchase ICT equipment for teaching and learning due to a lack of funds.

3. Some teachers lack the necessary training to use ICT in the classroom.

4. Due to a lack of quality, teachers adulterate their students, providing a barrier to their learning and development.

This is the researcher’s privilege to examine a school in Enugu North in order to determine whether or not they have implemented the use of ICT and record the success, but also to determine the cause of the failure.

1.3SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study is very important to use since it helps to assess the impact of information and communication technology on English language teaching and learning.

The researchers anticipated that if the suggestions and personal opinions proposed in this research work are implemented effectively and diligently,

the poor image of information and communication technology on the teaching and learning of English language will be restored, and the goal of introducing information and communication technology will be met.

Thus, the research work will assist the following groups of people: the government, parents, society, schools, and English language students.

1.4 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The primary goal of the study is to discover the barriers that teachers experience while using ICT and whether it has a beneficial impact on the teaching and learning of English language. More specifically, the study seeks to discover the following.

1) What are the challenges that teachers confront when adopting ICT

2) How far has society and government recognised the importance of ICT in teaching and learning

3) How much of an impact does ICT have on teaching and learning

4) How serious are the issues linked with the usage and application of ICT in research

1.5 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
As a result of the research’s defined goal, the following critical research questions are raised to help lead the study:
1) What are the challenges that teachers confront while implementing ICT?

2) How far has society and government recognised the importance of ICT in teaching and learning?

3) Does information and communication technology (ICT) improve teaching and learning?

4) What are the issues surrounding the usage and use of ICT in research?

1.6 SLIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
In Enugu State and throughout Nigeria, there are numerous government and private schools.
Due to time constraints and restricted research resources, the work is confined to schools in Enugu North.
