WESTERN IJAW AND HER ITSEKIRI NEIGHBOR IN PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD
Abstract
The ijaw and itsekiri are two of nigeria’s nearest neighbors in the warri area of the western niger delta region. For centuries, they had intermarried and lived together. But, by the late general sani abacha – led federal military government of the time, the two groups clashed, obviously over the relocation of the headquarters of the then newly created
warri south (later warri south-west) local government area in the present delta state from during the crisis that destroyed many private and public businesses and claimed many lives and property, the two groups fought each other with all kinds of dangerous and sophisticated weapons.
Many well-meaning people asked if there were any longstanding grievances between the two groups in this situation. The available records show that there were deep-rooted disputes between the two groups. These problems, however, started in nigeria during the colonial period. Prior to that, the two groups had lived in peace. This is the image the objective of this study is to document.
