INTRODUCTION
1.1 INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY
In contrast to the past, when it was believed that women’s education terminates in the kitchen or their husband’s home, the public’s perspective on women’s education has undergone a dramatic shift in recent years. Many have adopted the adage that educating a man educates an individual, whereas educating a woman educates an entire family.
This emphasises the significance of women’s education. Education is intended to provide and equip a person with the necessary knowledge, skills, and training to achieve independence in decision-making and to perform effectively in every endeavor.
The importance of women to the growth of any nation or city cannot be overstated. This is an effort to re-emphasize and reawaken the consciousness of humanity to the significance of women’s education as an indisputable vehicle for sustainable national development, beginning at home.
It is generally accepted that women are the children’s first instructors at home. If a mother is educated, she plays a significant role in shaping and moulding her children. This initiative seeks to investigate the role of education in the economic empowerment of women in the Gombe Local Government Area.
Effectively empowering women can be accomplished through education by designing and implementing a well-organized and well-planned educational programme. This is due to the fact that education is without question the most fundamental prerequisite for empowering women in all spheres.
Without education, they will be unable to access well-compensated employment in the formal sector, participate in government and acquire political influence, or even perform better at home. Despite the importance of education in human life, sociocultural practices are still prevalent in the state of Gombe, which has the highest number of female school dropouts and those who marry before the age of 18.
The vast majority of these dropouts never return to school to complete their education, learn a trade, or acquire vocational skills that will economically empower or make them self-sufficient.
Advocate for Youth in the North East recognised the potential of the women and believes that they are formidable catalysts for change. The organisation saw that the women can through education or acquisition of skills realise their potentials which will enable them to mobilise other women in their locality and address them pertinent issues.
The issues concern education and economic empowerment, as well as the provision of knowledge necessary for full participation in community decision-making. Nonetheless, a small number of women who married as teenagers returned to school and attained academic qualifications that enabled them to assume leadership positions in society and even enter politics. Others obtained training and vocational skills that enabled them to become business entrepreneurs, thereby contributing to the economic growth of their community.
1.2 DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM
According to the National Policy on Education, education is the tool for national development. It is very essential that women acquire education just like the men. Even though the policy has commendable goals and objectives, such as education for all, there are still women who are constrained, inhibited, and uninterested in education.
Does society recognise the need for educated women? What role does education play in the lives of women? Those women who obtained Western education are they superior than the other women? How are they been enhanced in their personal life, home or community? What are the consequences?
If women are empowered through education, can they contribute economically to the economic growth of their community? These are what the researcher wishes to look into as to draw conclusion. Many women believed that their purpose in life was to marry and have children, thereby becoming financially dependent on their husbands. This initiative will also provide suggestions for encouraging women to contribute to the economic development of their region through education.
1.3 THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The glory of a person’s existence is only revealed when he possesses knowledge. No one can advance beyond their level of knowledge; therefore, education is the supreme key to a happy life.
Any nation, state, or community that desires relevance and competitiveness in this era of globalisation must work to provide its citizens with the finest education. This is because education improves an individual’s quality and enables her to develop her personality in such a manner that she can contribute effectively to the development of the society to which she belongs.
Education is the foundation of any meaningful economic participation and development. In light of this, the federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs (2008) issued the following statement: According to the educator, educational attainment is without a doubt the most fundamental prerequisite for empowering women in society because it reduces the mortality rate and helps to control the birth rate, which women can be informed of.
Without a quality education, women may not make significant contributions to society.
The investigation was conducted specifically for these objectives;-

1.5 Importance of the Research
To the parents who do not value education of the girl child, individuals sand community, this course of study will help to enlighten them on the need to give their child adequate education before given her out for marriage. They will see why the poor homes persist in poverty and the homebuilder not empowered. The study will disclose to husbands, families, and friends what they stand to gain if their wife, mother, or female friend obtains an education. They will be able to encourage, support, and assist them in achieving their educational goals.
When a mother acquires or is trained in a particular skill, her children are likely to demonstrate that skill with relative ease.
Authorities will see this as a further justification for reinforcing the implementation of Section 1 of the National policy on education, which states that “every Nigerian infant must receive an education” in every community.
The study will provide education authorities with recommendations on how to reduce financial constraints, particularly at the tertiary level, to make education affordable for all. If education is truly the agent of social change, it should be provided to citizens by the government.
The study will demonstrate to the community how education fosters and stimulates cultural interest. In some cultures, it is believed that women with a high level of education do not respect culture; this study will determine whether this perception is justified.
1.6 DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This study is intended to span the Gombe Local Government Area, but time, security, and financial constraints prevent this from occurring. The scope of the survey would be restricted to the Federal Low-cost, Tunfure, and Jakadafari regions of the state. The study examines the obstacles, challenges, and benefits of women’s education to the individual, her family, community, and society. The findings of this research will be generalised to all women in the city of Gombe.
1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS
Education; In this context, education refers to a formal learning process through which the learner acquires the skills, knowledge, and training necessary to exist successfully in society.
In this context, “role” refers to the influence of education on the lives of those who acquire it. The role of education in the anticipated improvement of an individual.
In The Study, empowerment refers to granting someone greater authority to regulate themselves.
