Chapter One: Introduction
Background to the Study
Social networking has been around since the beginning of society. Humans have always desired to live in social surroundings. The rise of social networking sites (SNS) and their pervasiveness in everyday life is influencing how societies maintain their social networks.
SNS has significantly transferred local networking to the internet. In less than five years, these sites have expanded from a niche online pastime to a phenomenon, connecting tens of millions of internet users in their spare time, at work, and at school.
Networking is the process of meeting and conversing with others who may be valuable to you at work. Social networking is a theoretical concept used in the social sciences to investigate social ties among students. The theoretical approach is both necessary and related.
1.2 Statement of Problem
Social networking sites are built around profiles, which are essentially individual (or group) home pages that provide a description of each member.
In addition to the person’s own text, photographs, and videos, the social network site profile includes comments from other members as well as a public list of people that the member considers friends inside the network.
Due to this effect and its lack in our current communalism, there is a loophole that must be bridged, which has caused less relationships among the students, resulting in minimal ideas in situations like tweeting famous conversations
attending lectures remotely share inspirations, ideas, reading and thoughts, and also absence in interpersonal understanding, that is getting to know small bits of others overtime, as happens through social media, which provides a great
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The study’s aims are:
Create and install a web-based social networking system for students and staff.
Improve the demands on teachers when revamping the curriculum.
How students can become valuable contributors to the teaching and learning process.
The creation of suitable tools to ensure that active student learning occurs; learning that supports the new literacy required in our world today.
1.4 Significance of the Study
This project aims to restore sanity and hope in students’ thoughts by putting an end to lecture clashes and unneeded shifts by instructors. The new system will serve as a reference point for future research on this subject by other departments, faculties, and schools seeking to prevent lecture clashes.
The following concepts highlight the potential benefits for students of using social networking:
Social and recreational new media are employed as a learning site. It is crucial to recognise that people who communicate socially online are developing the social and technology skills required to participate in modern society.
Diversity in media literacy- Online interactions can range from strictly friendship-driven to interest-driven, but each may provide benefits in terms of socialising or education, both of which are required for participation in a future social networking environment.
Peer-based learning- The use of new media makes learning from peers easier, which has some advantages over learning from adults, including teachers.
1.5 Scope of Study
A social networking site is a web-based service that allows users to create a public or semi-public profile, articulate a list of other users with whom they have a connection, add new connections, and browse their list of connections as well as those produced by others inside the system.
Networking prioritises relationship formation, often between strangers. While networking is available on many sites, it is not the major practice on many of them, nor does it distinguish them from other types of computer-mediated communication (CMC).
It needs to be implemented at all Nigerian universities. This study will concentrate on the creation of a social networking system for students and faculty.
1.6 Definition of Terms.
A few terminology must be defined as they pertain to the overall study of Chapter One.
