CHAPITER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Information managers may use the constantly changing Internet infrastructure and technological advancements in the information management area to develop new strategies for gathering, storing, managing, and disseminating information (Davies, 1989).

For this reason, university libraries are constantly searching for cutting-edge technologies to improve their user services. Libraries are integrating the new digital repository platform into their portals to offer more digital resources and services.

The design and deployment of institutional repositories will require additional financing and resources. Institutional repositories—also referred to as digital libraries

—are used to provide services that assist users in finishing activities by interacting with systems and watching their interactions. In the situation of such services, users, provided content, and the system on which they are done are all crucial elements.

The most recent developments in the field of information for academic institutions and resource centres are digital information resources. Digital information resources are described as information-bearing materials in digital form by Bhattacharya, U. (2007).

These include local and remote databases, CDs and DVDs, and electronic publications including e-books, e-journals, and Web resources.

E-resources have been a crucial component of the infrastructure employed by many academic institutions all over the world to provide their customers with superior services.

A collection of records that have been organised electronically and are readily accessible to academic researchers through the Internet or CD-ROM are referred to as digital libraries or repositories.

Similar to how libraries have come to represent a university, digital repositories are becoming commonplace in many academic and research institutions. It appears to be required in colleges and research facilities.

In a poll of 1152 information workers, 70% claimed to have created and executed digital repositories, and 22 claimed to have plans to do so.

As a result, since many people think that repositories are becoming more significant, it is a reality that the number of digital repositories can only increase.

Since digital repositories are connected to webometric rankings, which increase the exposure of research from African institutions, they will surely grow more prevalent at African colleges.

The University of Lagos repository, “UNILAG,” uses DSpace (2), an open access proprietary programme that is not only helpful for archiving and disseminating research-related documents but also offers excellent utility features like reuse and metadata storage that are in line with requirements for modern repository usage.

In order to help businesses “better deploy and manage their IT resources and enhance overall effectiveness,” traditional studies have focused on evaluating the value of information technology to the organisation and the factors that affect that value.

This study benefits from the method Davies (1989) suggested for analysing the elements influencing how each user adopts and uses IT. Delone and Mclean (1992), who focused on the use of utilisation as a proxy parameter for information system performance, were pioneers in this idea.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Academic institutions have embraced digital information resources by making informational materials and services available online to their expanding user base wherever they are.

E-resources and digital libraries are among the services offered, in addition to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter (Davies, 1989).

The world of digital resources and repositories in libraries faces a number of challenges. They encompass use, organisational, legal, and technological challenges. One of the most challenging tasks is figuring out the challenges consumers face while engaging with or using digital libraries.

These issues have grown in importance as important study areas in recent years. Use research is essential to determining whether various user groups are on board, capable of using products and services on a digital platform provided by an institution, and if usage is optimal within the communities for whom it is intended.

Usage research investigates current barriers and illuminates the relationship between efficacy, efficiency, and enjoyment on important user attributes.

The study’s findings will serve as a strong basis for choosing the optimal approach to enhancing repository content availability and overall support to the organization’s objectives in its pursuit of the greatest possible online exposure.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The primary goal of this study is to evaluate academic repositories as a tool for effective student research projects. The particular goals are;

i. To look into the difficulties students have utilising the UNILAG repository.

ii. To assess the impact of academic repositories on students’ academic achievement at Lagos State University.

iii. To find out why students choose repositories for their research projects.

iv. To make suggestions for ways to make repositories better so that research projects can succeed.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

For the study, the following inquiries have been prepared:

What difficulties do students encounter when using the UNILAG repository?

What impact does the academic repository have on the academic success of Lagos State University students?

What are the justifications for students using repositories for their research projects?

What can be done to make repositories better so that research projects are successful?

1.5 RELATIONSHIP TO OTHER STUDIES

Over time, there has been an increase in information system usage research. This study pursues this line of inquiry in an effort to shed light on how academic performance is impacted by students’ use of the digital repository at academic institutions.

Concluding remarks will be provided after the results have been examined. These findings have implications for the Library Management, University Management, and the larger university community on a number of fronts;

It will provide the library management with information on how widely the various user groups in the institution use the digital resources on the library’s digital platforms the various user groups’ current access challenges to these resources.

The study’s findings will be helpful for the new field of knowledge in Nigeria as well as the founders and managers of any future academic repositories that are set up throughout the entire nation.

1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study will look at the difficulties that students have utilising the UNILAG repository. The project will assess the impact of academic repositories on students at Lagos State University’s academic achievement.

The study will look into why students use repositories for their research projects in more detail. Finally, the study will offer suggestions for how repositories might be enhanced to support the success of a research project. This effort will therefore be restricted to UNILAG.

1.7 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

Throughout the research procedure, the researcher faced a number of difficulties. They included not having enough money to purchase necessary supplies for the study’s conduct, such as stationery, transportation, and other essential equipment. Additionally, there is a time crunch because the researcher must attend lectures in addition to conducting research.

1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS

A repository is a location or container where items are or may be kept.

Academic Repository: Universities save their materials in this specially created digital repository.

Research: systematic, creative activity done to add to the body of information

1.9 ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY

For ease of understanding, this study effort is divided into five chapters as follows:

The first chapter is devoted to the introduction, which includes an overview of the study, its historical context, statement of the problem, study objectives, research hypotheses, significance of the study, its scope and limitations, definition of terms, and its historical context.

The review of related literature is highlighted in Chapter 2 in order to provide the theoretical foundation for the study. The third chapter covers the study’s methodology and research strategy.

The gathering, processing, and presentation of data are the main topics of Chapter 4. The study’s summary, conclusion, and suggestions are presented in Chapter 5.
