ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE AND INTERNAL PARTY DEMOCRACY IN RIVERS STATE: A STUDY OF THE 2007 PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC PARTY GUBERNATORIAL PRIMARY ELECTION
ABSTRACT
The democratisation process is ongoing, and political parties play an important role in it. Nigerian political parties are no exception. However, Nigerian political parties have demonstrated a very low level of internal democracy since the establishment of the Fourth Republic in 1999.
This is more visible in the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), particularly in the handling of party primaries. In the 2007 gubernatorial election primary, this study looked at the administration of justice and internal party democracy.
Two research problems were highlighted about the implementation of the rule of law and the structure of the PDP. Using Marxist theory of the state as a framework for analysis, it was discovered that the PDP has an oligarchic structure and so revolves around a few important party leaders whose words are law in the party.
The PDP hierarchy would have succeeded in subverting justice in Rivers State PDP during the 2007 gubernatorial election primary if the judiciary had not intervened.
