CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND
A number of students in educational institutions have been observed to be absent. They become truants in order to participate in activities that are not under the control of either the home or the school. to protect himself or herself The truant fools his parents and teachers, and repeated truancy may result in vagrancy. Truancy is more indicative of the inadequacy of our current educational system than of a proclivity for crime.
It is a system that places little value on individuality. There are numerous ways in which children demonstrate their truancy. An example can be found in Irele, Ondo state, where students usually go to the bush to look for snails, kill rabbits, and collect fruits, and go to hidden places for no reason. Some go to the rivers to swim, while others work petty jobs to earn money for snacks, minerals, ice cream, and so on.
Some even have secret love affairs that force them to leave the school grounds. Some students will have to explore other places to relax and satisfy their curiosity because they cannot bear or remain in the corrective environment at home or at school. Obviously, such students will be absent from school. A truant is also someone who misses school for no apparent reason.
He or she misses school because he or she finds other places more appealing than that school and all. Truancy is one of the offenses committed by students in educational institutions. According to research, truancy occurs to varying degrees in educational institutions, with secondary schools having a higher truancy rate than higher education institutions.
According to studies, the rate at which our society’s employees and students commit truancy is alarming. This most likely indicates the effectiveness of externally motivated factors in causing individuals to conform to societal norms. In this study, I would like to look at the child’s personality, the parents, the child’s developmental stages, and the possible causes, effects, and solutions of truancy, which is caused by a combination of factors rather than a single isolated factor. These are far from the only factors that have been blamed for the high rate of truancy among students.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Truancy is a serious threat to learning in most schools; however, the schools do not appear to be able to deal with the problem. Because insufficient efforts have been made to reach its source. One thing is certain in this case. Schoolchildren are increasingly involved in social vices such as stealing, smoking, and so on.
This is because most homes no longer perform their traditional function of rearing and raising children in a moral manner. This is because many parents are so preoccupied with duties (working, traveling) outside the home that they have little or no time to monitor their children’s actions and behavior.
There is no conducive learning environment in the majority of their schools. This is due to the fact that schools are overcrowded, underequipped, and understaffed. Students are unable to cope with the unfavorable conditions in which these schools are located, which eventually leads to truancy and other social vices prevalent in our society today.
Broken families can also be attributed to the cause of truancy because children from single parents are more vulnerable to the dangers of society.
For example, a single parent child will leave the mother’s house and say he or she is going to the father house, thereby taking advantage of the opportunity to go and stay in her boyfriend’s house for the boys, they so and join bad peer group without the mother and father knowing, because they would think she is in the father house and vice versa.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
This study is being conducted to identify potential solutions to the causes of truancy as a social problem among secondary school students. Our policymakers, administrators, parents, teachers, students, and anyone else involved in our educational system must address this issue.
It must stand the test of time as a solution to the majority of our societal problems. This would undoubtedly contribute to national welfare, productivity, and alleviate the unpleasant situation that students who are perceived as failure face.
THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE
The goal of this study is to identify the causes of truancy among secondary school students. In addition, the findings of this study will be useful to education planners, school administrators, parents, and the general public. It will add to the small body of literature on truancy.
QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH
The following are the study’s research questions:
1. Does insufficient equipment encourage truancy among students of various groups?
2. Does poor classroom management contribute to school truancy?
3. Is truancy caused by a lack of parental care?
THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE
The study would be limited to the Irele West Local Government Area of Ondo State and would focus on the impact of truancy on students’ academic performance in the Irele West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
TERMS DEFINITION
A truant is a child who misses school for no apparent reason in order to avoid unpleasant classroom work. Truancy is defined by Herbert (1994) as “a child who absents himself from school without a legitimate reason and without the permission of his parents or the school authorities.”
Truancy is defined as frequent absence from school without permission. This has an impact on learning because students who are absent from school due to truancy miss lessons.
