ATTITUDE OF PARENTS TOWARDS THE STUDY OF SEX EDUCATION IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS
ABSTRACT
Early sex education for our youth is essential. This study was done to investigate parents’ attitudes regarding the study of sex education in secondary schools in an enlightened community, such as the University of Benin in Benin City.
Data were collected via a questionnaire. A total of 200 surveys were sent to parents across five (5) faculties. This study uses a survey design with a basic random sample technique to collect data for the investigation. The data was analysed using the Statistical Product and Service Solution, SPSS 16.0.
The results were presented as simple percentages and frequency tables. There were 95 men and 105 women among the respondents. According to the questionnaire responses, 92% of our parents in these faculties have a positive attitude towards the study of sex education in secondary schools, 58.5% of respondents’ cultural beliefs influence their attitudes towards the study of sex education in schools, and teachers’ qualification in health education influences their attitude towards the study of sex education in secondary schools.
According to this study, parents want their children to be educated about sex and sexual health by educators who have the necessary skills and qualifications; yet, they also want to know about the programs that will be offered at their child’s school.
