ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine the bacteriological quality of pasteurised liquid milk samples offered at various stores in Imo State University’s front gate students market. A total of four samples were taken. The total coliform and heterophilic bacterial counts were determined from the samples. The results revealed that two of the samples (1 and 2) showed no growth on both Nutrient agar and MacConkey agar, hence they were deemed good. Samples 2 and 3 showed growth rates ranging from 7.0X104 to 9.0X104 and 1.3X105 to 1.3X105, respectively. Further identification tests revealed the presence of Escherichia coli and Enterobacter spp. in samples 3 and 4, hence they were marked unacceptable. The presence of coliform bacteria indicates the likelihood of pathogenic bacteria, which can cause disease.
