CHALLENGES FACING TRANSPORT SECTOR IN PROVIDING QUALITY SERVICE TO THE SOCIETY

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background for the Study

The transport sectors, particularly road transport, provide the most efficient ways of moving people, especially in densely populated urban areas. In addition to its users’ well-being, public transit contributes significantly to city productivity, which has a direct impact on national economies (World Bank, 2001; Lyndon and Todd, 2006).

One of the primary goals of urban transport planners around the world is to increase the quality of public transit services in order to fulfil passengers’ ever-increasing requirements and expectations.

According to a survey of worldwide literature on public transport quality, service quality reflects passenger perceptions of public transport quality (Mfinanga, D., and Ochieng 2006).

Urban transport systems in large emerging cities have significant challenges as urban populations grow, private vehicle ownership increases, congestion worsens, and public transport systems become more fragile.

When the urban transport system fails, the implications affect households, businesses, and the urban population as a whole. Transport may become a binding constraint on economic growth, social development, and inclusion, as well as having a negative impact on health and the environment (World Bank, 2011).

Lagos State is one of Africa’s major economies, with an estimated urban population of 9 million (2006 Census) and an annual population growth rate of more than 4%. Lagos state, like many other African cities, has suffered from the consequences of bad public transport: inefficiency, low service quality, and a lack of commuter safety (JICA, 2008).

Like many cities in developing countries, Lagos state’s urban public transit is primarily via road, making the bus services sector a critical player in passenger transportation.

Lagos state currently has about 10,000 commuter buses, serving around 63 percent of the city’s population. According to SUMATRA (2012), buses account for up to 60% of all city journeys.

Access to affordable and high-quality public transport services is critical for Lagos state’s urban population, resulting in economic, social, and physical isolation, particularly among low-income communities on the city outskirts who lack access to public transport and other basic urban facilities located in the Central Business District (CBD) (Nkurunziza et al, 2012).

Similarly, in 1993, the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) implemented the National Transport Policy (NTP), which aimed to achieve sustainability in the transport sector. Although the NTP is intended to guide decision-making in the transportation industry, it has been seen to have minimal influence.

Despite the programme, for example, Nigeria’s transport infrastructure is decaying at a rate of N800 billion naira, or 5.41 percent per year, and service quality is declining. According to the analysis, despite the Federal Government of Nigeria’s (FGN) massive expenditure in the transport sub-sector of the economy

the introduction of an elaborate National Transport Policy, and the formulation of strategies for implementing the policy in 1993 and 2002, respectively, aimed at promoting viable sustainable transport, the system remains sluggish and unsustainable.

1.2 Statement of Problem

Nigeria’s transport systems provide mobility, access, and other benefits, such as increasing productivity in other areas of the economy, such as agriculture and industry.

At the same time, the transport industry contributes to a number of significant environmental pressures, including atmospheric pollution, traffic accidents and congestion, resource depletion, trash accumulation, and disruption of nature and cities.

Similarly, population expansion, increasing economic activity, and rising wages all contribute to higher demand for transport services, which has some negative implications for development. These implications include economic, social, and environmental challenges that impede Nigeria’s sustainable transportation system.

Following the growth of private public transport in society, there have been so many consequent negative effects; sustainable transport policy has been adopted in many parts of the world, in order to deal effectively with the threats and simultaneously provide optimal mobility and access

but there are still some challenges posing as a threat to provide a good and quality service to the public; this study hereby investigates the challenges facing the transport sector in

1.3 Object of the Study

The major goal of this study is to find out the issues facing the transport sector in providing excellent service in Nigeria. Specifically, the study wants to

1. Determine the problems affecting the provision of quality service at God is Good Motors.

2. Analyse the effect of the challenges on God’s production. Good motors.

3. Provide solutions to the difficulties faced by Nigeria’s transport sector.

1.4 Research question

1. What are the issues affecting the provision of quality service at God Is Good Motors?

2. Is there any influence of the obstacles on the production of God’s Good Motors?

3. What is the solution to the issues faced by the transport sector in Nigeria?

1.5 Research Hypothesis.

Ho: the issues affecting the transportation business have no effect on the production of God is Good Motors.

Hello: there is an impact of the issues facing the transportation business on the productivity of God is Good Motors.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study’s findings will benefit all stakeholders in the urban public transport sector in Lagos state, particularly managers of public transport firms, by assisting them in strategically planning their activities and placing a greater emphasis on the quality of services provided.

The study’s findings will also help bus operators, conductors, and drivers become more service-focused (or customer-focused) in order to achieve better financial results by providing high-quality services.

The study’s findings will also assist policymakers and legislators in identifying challenges facing the public transport sector in Nigeria as a whole, allowing them to develop policies, laws, and regulations that will help to alleviate the current challenges faced by the public transport sector and thus improve the level of quality of public transport service.

Finally, the study’s findings will serve as a guide and reference point for future studies on the same or related themes, providing them with an empirical literature review and adding to existing understanding on the subject.

1.7 Scope of Study

This research will concentrate on Lagos state because it has the most urbanised economy in Nigeria, and God is Good Motors will be utilised as a case study.

1.8 Delimitation of the Study

Obtaining funding for general research projects will be difficult during the course of studies. Correspondents may also be unable or unwilling to complete and submit the questionnaires provided to them.

However, it is hoped that these limits will be addressed by making the best use of existing materials and devoting more time to study. As a result, it is strongly thought that despite these constraints, their impact on this research report will be small, allowing the study’s purpose and significance to be achieved.

1.9 Definition of Terms

The transport sector refers to businesses that provide services for moving people, products, or the infrastructure required to do so.
