CREDIT MANAGEMENT (A Case Study of Afribank Nig. Plc)
ABSTRACT
The increasing competition in the Nigeria Banking industry necessitates that banks take higher degree of risks than they are hitherto accustomed to . But the degree of risk inherent in a banks credit portfolio has serious implication on its earnings, assets and corporate survival with its attendant multiplier effect on liquidity, profitability and capital base. The problem with which this study was concerned is that of identifying variables that constitute a banks credit management policy with a view to reducing if not totally eradicating the incidence of bad debts in a banks lending portfolio, the business of which forms more than 80% of commercial banks business activity. The objective of the study was to identify credit management principles/policies, their effect and positive suggestions highlighting (a) Credit assessment and appraisal tools (b) Credit administration, monitoring and control © Possible causes of bad and doubtful debts (d) Management of bad debts (e) Bad debts recovery strategies and procedures Consequently, four hypothesis were stated for testing at 5% level of significance. These are: 1. That the existence of a comprehensive credit policy for a bank does not ensure effective credit portfolio management 2. That strict adherence to the basic guides to sound lending does not guarantee qualitative credit portfolio and profitability of the bank. 3. That proper credit administration monitoring and control is not a possible measure for the avoidance of bad and doubtful debts. 4. That bad debts cannot be recovered not withstanding the banks bad debts managements principle and recovery strategies. The research sample was selected from a population of fifty (50) officers from the credit departments of the bank. The questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection which was subjected to chi-square test. The result of the data analysis implied that the enumerated hypothesis do have a positive impact on the banks quality of credit portfolio.
