DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN ONLINE LEGAL PRACTITIONERS REPRESENTATION SYSTEM
Chapter One: Design and Implementation of an Online Legal Practitioners Representation System
– Introduction.
Hiring a lawyer is one of the things most people wish they never had to go through since it entails making a significant commitment to paying another person to appropriately represent your interests by ensuring that whatever purpose you hired them for is completed fast and smoothly.
Understanding the breadth of the issue for which one wishes to employ a lawyer is always important because it helps to choose the type of lawyer to look for.
The online legal practitioner representation system is a legal platform designed to address the issue that existed in the previous system, in which both search parties (appellants and respondents) limited their search scheme to only asking for recommendations of a good lawyer, typically from friends and relatives who have had similar needs in the past.
This manner of seeking a referral for a decent lawyer has long left search parties at the mercy of lawyers who have no interest (expertise) in the filed complaint, resulting in ineffective representation.
To address the aforementioned issue of inefficient legal representation, this system makes the profiles of lawyers (Barristers and Solicitors) available to the general public on the internet, allowing them to make a more informed decision about which lawyer will best meet their needs after comparing the available profiles.
The online legal practitioner representation system affects all aspects of life where law is involved, as well as other activities that presuppose and necessitate the application of legal knowledge and skills that follow legal procedures.
Historical Background of the Study
Over the years, in order to be properly represented in a case, people have confined their search to only asking people to recommend a lawyer for them, usually because they have previously experienced troubles that required the services of a lawyer.
In Nigeria, there are tens of thousands of lawyers, and finding one who best meets one’s needs has long been a daunting task.
The essential interest of a lawyer is to preserve his client’s interests. Although they are recognised as “learned fellows,” not all of them are appropriate for all situations; lawyers specialise in certain areas.
For example, using a company lawyer for a criminal case may not work well because he or she is specialised in protecting an organization’s interests (properties, policies, rights, etc.), whereas using a criminal lawyer will almost certainly result in a positive outcome because that is where the lawyer specialises.
Most lawyers have throughout the years played the defence part in litigation whose extent exceeds their skills, and lawyers of Customary Court, Afikpo are no exception;
nonetheless, such an act is frequently driven by the lawyer’s urgent capital-intensive needs. As a result, a mechanism like online legal practitioner representation will help to combat this danger.
Statement of the Problem
The current system for hiring a lawyer in Customary Court, Afikpo could be referred to as the manual system, in which both the appellants and the respondents go from house to house seeking legal representation
which in most cases results in poor representation because they frequently end up getting a lawyer who is unskilled in their area of filed suit, causing them to lose a case that would have been ruled in their favour if they had a skilled lawyer.
Objectives of the Study
The purpose of this research is to improve the notion of employing an online legal practitioner representation system in Customary Court, Afikpo. Having a platform like this running will help to achieve the following goals:
Save the time and resources that appellants and respondents have invested in finding a lawyer.
Give appellants and respondents equal opportunities at justice by making lawyers’ profiles easily accessible.
Create a more transparent and interactive judicial system.
Scope and limitations of the study
This system exclusively serves the Customary Court of Afikpo.
Significance of the Study
Benefits of this work include:
It will help to ensure that appellants and respondents hire the best advocate for their requirements.
It will save time and money by eliminating the need to spend nearly a month searching for a competent lawyer.
There is room for comparison; lawyers’ profiles are public, allowing users to evaluate their options.
