INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background for the Study
Reading culture is a term used to describe a community’s deliberate practice of reading. Several elements contribute to the development of this reading culture. One of these is an adequate reading material in the popular media.
Prior to the turn of the millennium, newspapers and books were the most popular reading mediums, and for new stories, everyone looked to newspapers with vim, making them linked with the learnt and elite.
However, with the advancement of information technology and all of its other means of information dissemination and information systems, the patronage of print media has dwindled.
To add to the bargain, information technological know-how is on the rise, and their applications are proving to be very simple, particularly among the youth.
They serve multiple functions and strive to make life as simple as possible. With this kind of picture, print media does not appear to stand a chance.
1.2 Statement of Problem
The difficulties of a certain approach of doing something or addressing a problem are only revealed when a simpler method is discovered. With journalism’s inventive use of websites and social media platforms for new distribution, young people’s focus has changed away from print media and towards soft prints via phones and computers.
In reality, in addition to print media, most newspapers today have websites where they post their news, as well as blogs and social media profiles. This strongly influences millennials’ attitudes towards the allegedly laborious print media.
This is the objective that the current research project has set for itself: to investigate the determinants and problems of reading print editions of newspapers using the youth of Delta state from the federal college of education in Asaba as a case study.
1.3 Research Questions.
1.3.1 – What are the shortcomings of print newspapers?
1.3.2 What additional possibilities exist outside the print edition of newspapers.
1.3.3 What are the advantages of these alternative options versus printed versions?
1.3.4 What are the advantages of the print version over the other choice, ensuring that it does not become obsolete?
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The goals of this research are to identify the various challenges that youths face when reading print versions of newspapers, as well as to determine the factors that inform this total shift away from newspaper culture and towards soft copies and less journalistic forms of news writing.
The processes that resulted in the paradigmatic shift from the print media format of news stories to the current one, which is defined by information technology systems.
1.5 Significance of the Study
The study’s goal is to offer light on the aspects that influence and challenge people when reading print newspapers. The conclusions of this study will assist newspapers better adapt to the changing terrains, tastes, and reading habits of millennials in order to survive in an age where reading newspaper prints is rather laborious and pricey.
1.6 Research Hypothesis
The idea motivating the current research is that today’s young people are not predisposed to reading news in print newspapers.
1.7 Scope of Study
The research will concentrate on Delta youngsters. Specifically, young individuals from the Federal College of Education in Asaba. The comparison between youth-friendly information technology and moribund print newspapers will focus on the use of soft new reports in websites, blogs, and social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, where young people choose the kind of news materials they want to see and it begins scrolling down their timelines.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The main limiting element in this study endeavour is time, which hasn’t given the researcher the time to completely connect with the research problem as would have been ideal.
1.9 Definition of Terms
Print Media
These are the mediums used by news providers to disseminate their news materials, which include the use of hard copy printed materials rather than the soft online medium that millennials prefer.
