EFFECT OF DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP STYLES ON CORPORATE PERFORMANCE

ABSTRACT

This project examines the effect of democratic leadership style on corporate performance in an organisation, specifically the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Abakaliki. The primary goal of the study is to examine the impact of democratic leadership style on company performance.

The data collection methodology was survey design. The sample size was the entire staff of NTA Abakaliki. The study discovered that the television station’s management was fairly democratic.

However, they must properly include democratic ideas into the operation of the station. The report suggests that NTA Abakaliki use a team leadership approach in its management style, and that management avoid wasting too much time in meetings and consultations before making decisions.

Chapter One: Introduction 1.1 Background of the Study

Leadership is an essential component in management operations. Effective leadership is the single most important factor that distinguishes successful organisations from unsuccessful ones. Leadership is the process of influencing others in order to achieve specific goals.

Umoh (2004:2) stated that managers (business leaders) are essential resources for all organisations. Philosophers, academics, and intellectuals have all contributed significantly to our understanding of leadership.

Several definitions have been proposed, and scholars have entered into the field of leadership (Stogdill, 1974: 259). Consequently, and based on their differences

Several theories of leadership have been defined and presented in various literatures. Those theories include several leadership styles and the conditions in which they are appropriate. Many organisations have established since the economy’s deregulation, and many more are on the way.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Every organisation relies on effective leadership. Although progress has been made in understanding leadership, it is important to recognise that there is no widespread agreement on what makes the optimal leadership style.

Leadership styles include democratic, autocratic, laissez-faire, and so on. Each of these leadership styles has far-reaching ramifications for the organization’s human and material resources, as well as corporate success, as measured by employee happiness, dedication, and involvement, among other factors.

As a result, it stands to reason that successful organisations, among other things, have effective leadership. What are the prevalent leadership styles in such an organisation, and how do they align with existing management theories on leadership?

1.3 RESEARCH QUESTIONS.

The relevant questions this study tries to answer are:

1) What is the leadership style at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Abakaliki?

2) How does this leadership style influence business performance?

1.4 Object of Study

The overall goal of this research is to increase the impact of leadership style on business performance. Specifically, the project aims to

1) Determine the type of leadership style used by Nigerian Television Authority, Abakaliki.

2) Determine the impact of this leadership style on corporate performance.

1.5 Significance of the Study

Most businesses in Nigeria are successful or fail due to their organisational leadership style. The significance of this research is an awareness of the value of the leadership style used by the Nigerian Television Authority in Abakaliki.

This study will also assist other organisations in seeking and implementing the leadership style that will improve their business performance. It will assist the researcher in having in-depth knowledge of the various leadership styles used by organisations as well as identifying the most appropriate one for each organisation.

Similarly, knowledge of leadership styles will assist the researcher in recommending an appropriate one that will enhance the organization’s growth and development.

1.6 Limitations of the Study

The researcher experienced many budgetary restrictions while doing this investigation. Among these limits is the difficulty in gathering the necessary data for the investigation.

This is because NTA Channel 45 Abakaliki, which serves as the case study for this paper, was unable to supply the researcher with information about their organization’s profile. Second, there was a time limitation;

the time allotted to the researcher to complete the research task was insufficient, therefore the researcher focused on a few branches. However, this constraint was circumvented by utilising the data available to the organization’s management.

1.7 Organisation of Work

This research report is divided into five chapters. Chapter one provides the research background, including the statement of problems, objectives, significance, limitations, work organisation, and term definitions

while chapters two and three provide a critical literature review and methodology, respectively. Chapter four covers the presentation and analysis of data, while the final chapter summarises the study, draws conclusions, and makes suggestions.

1.8 A Brief History of the Nigerian Television Authority, Channel 43 ABAKALIKI.

The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Channel 43, often known as the Sunrise Station, was one of the seventy-two (72) television channels established by NTA in 2001. NTA Abakaliki is divided into six (6) sections, each overseen by a manager. They include:

1) The administrative division is in responsibility of employee recruitment, promotion, and welfare.

2) The finance/accounting section is in charge of budgeting and salary payments, among other things.

3) The Engineering division is in charge of technological work.

4) Marketing division, which handles all of their public transactions.

5) A news and programme division, consisting of editing, directing, and programme presentation sections.

The station was founded with the mission of informing, educating, and entertaining the public. Their personnel consists of 45 persons, divided into junior, senior, and management positions.
