effect of flood on land utilization: disaster prevention in nigeria

INTRODUCTION

Land Use: Floods are among the most devastating natural disasters in the world, causing discomfort and illness while also killing more people and increasing poverty and property destruction than any other natural phenomenon.

In Nigeria, while not the primary cause of death, flood impacts and displaces more people than any other disaster; it also causes more property damage. Flooding affects at least 20% of the population.

Floods have posed a threat to people, communities, and institutions throughout Nigeria. Flooding recently affected Usman Danfodio University in Sokoto and other parts of the country, displacing residents in a variety of locations.

It devastated both the built environment and the undeveloped plan. It has taken numerous lives and caused millions of property losses. One notable trait is that flooding does not discriminate, but rather marginalises those who refuse to prepare for its occurrence. Land Utilisation

Whereas flooding is a circumstance that occurs when normally dry ground is inundated with water from a river overflowing or heavy rain, flooding occurs naturally on flood plains that are vulnerable to disaster.

It occurs when water in a river overflows its banks or, in other cases, is caused by a dam. It happens unexpectedly but with a surprise delivery that always delivers to unprepared communities such as those in Sokoto, Kaduna, Kebbi, Ogun, and Lagos, to name a few.

The floods ravaging communities bordering Ogun and Lagos States have not only left several people homeless, destroyed property, and disrupted business activities;

they also threaten to expose residents to an impending cholera, diarrhoea, malaria, skin infections, and other water-borne disease epidemic.
