Chapter One – Study Objectives

The main goal of the research is to provide an assessment of the influence of cartoons on newspaper readership among students. A case study of the University of Lagos Akoka. Specific aims include

1. Determine the relevancy of the cartoon.

2 To investigate the impact of cartoons on newspaper readership among students.

3 To investigate the impact of cartoons on newspaper readership among students at the University of Lagos Akoka.

Chapter Two: Literature Review

CARTOONS

According to blogs and online searches (http://www.answers.com/topic/thehistoryofthecartoon), the term “cartoon” refers to several art styles that include drawings with or without text.

This broad category includes caricatures, cartoons, comic strips, and animations. While the first three fall under the print media, the last relates to drawing rendered lively through an electronic process and, thus, maybe only in the television and film media.

Prior to the creation of the term cartoon in its contemporary connotation in the nineteenth century, all sarcastic and amusing drawings were referred to as caricatures.

Today, the term “caricature” refers to distorted portraiture that emphasises an individual’s characteristics. It can stand alone or be part of a cartoon. Beyond these primary genres, the term cartoon has also been applied to comics, television and cinema animation, multi-frame jokes published in newspapers, continuity strips, graphic novels, amusing advertising, funny book and magazine graphics, and satirical puppetry.

Chapter Three: Research Design

Research designs are defined as the researcher’s overall strategy in which various study components are logically integrated to effectively address a research challenge. In this study, the researcher used a survey research design.

This is due to the study’s nature, which involves sampling people’s opinions and beliefs. According to Singleton and Straits (2009), survey research can employ quantitative research techniques (e.g., questionnaires with numerically rated items), qualitative research strategies (e.g., open-ended questions), or both (mixed methods).

Surveys are widely utilised in social and psychological research because they are commonly used to describe and explore human behaviour.

Chapter Four: Data Analysis

This chapter includes an analysis of data obtained from the questionnaire and key informant interviews presented to respondents in the research region. The study’s findings provided the basis for the analysis and interpretation.

The data analysis illustrates the simple frequency and percentage of respondents, as well as the interpretation of the collected information. A total of eighty (80) questionnaires were administered to respondents, with only seventy-seven (77) returned and validated.

Chapter 5 – Summary

It is vital to note that the goal of this study was to determine the impact of cartoons on newspaper readership among students. In the prior chapter, the important data acquired for this investigation were presented, critically analysed, and interpreted appropriately.

In this chapter, several recommendations are provided that, in the view of the researcher, will be beneficial in addressing the influence of cartoons on news paper readership among students.
