INFLUENCE OF NEWS COMMENTARIES ON RADIO LISTENERS

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

Background for the Study

Communication is the process of transferring messages from one person to another in order to convey information. Information is essential in all aspects of life due to its value to a nation and society as a whole.

They argue information is critical because it has significant social, economic, and political ramifications. Communication is not a new concept for humans; it is vital to human existence, continuity, and country growth.

Broadcasting, as defined by the Communication Act of 1934, is the spread of radio and television signals intended to be received simultaneously by the general public or intermediaries such as radio stations. Newspapers, magazines, and electronic devices such as radios and televisions are all used for communication.

The broadcast sector, which includes radio, television, and some print media, is very important to society as a whole. The electronic media categories are the most prominent and significant media among the various modes of communication.

Radio looks to be very essential because it is widely covered and used in both urban and rural locations. Radio, as a medium of mass communication, has a broader breadth of coverage and has a bigger impact on the audience due to its widespread use. Radio is a mechanical medium of communication, and its reception

According to Levine (2011), radio remains a popular medium for reporting on both local and international news. Although developments in technology may have led to the emergence of a diverse range of media sources and platforms, making the radio more accessible for the people.

Radio media is a crucial component that is prevalent in both rural and urban locations. Radio is unquestionably one of the most widely used forms of media. The relationship between radio and its audience has always been built on a reciprocal act of faith.

The media is unaware of its listeners since they are unable to identify or observe those who are listening. Radio and its listeners have always been strangers, and listeners had no idea who the voices on the radio belonged to.

The history of radio news commentary in Nigeria dates back to the 1930s, when what was known as a radio receiver was nothing more than a wooden box and an amplifier.

Today’s media houses not only provide opinion on societal issues, but they also discuss potential solutions to societal problems. The media house has become a platform for disseminating news commentary soon following important news bulletins, maybe as an attention-grabbing approach.

The media house not only airs opinions made by its own staff, but also employs those published in the additional headlines of other new periodicals, so allowing for freedom of expression.(Tiziano 2014).

Radio stations with varied frequency modulations broadcast news commentary to unseen listeners. Although sight or vision is a necessary in learning and retention-visual is thought to enable the memory to produce previously retained knowledge, which increases fast remembering.

Furthermore, the need of radio stations to attract more advertisements and customers in order to create more income prompted news commentary. The word commentary refers to a notepad or explanation.

It also refers to a statement, remark, or criticised note. According to Mikhail, as cited in Uwakala (2015), commentary is a review and explanation of public and political facts and events.

Its strength lies in the competent, correct selection and interposition of facts with critical assessment of events, which guides the listener’s reaction and works on their minds to form certain opinions.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Radio is widely used in both rural and urban locations due to its accessibility whether driving, walking with a transistor radio, or using a mobile phone to listen to news and commentaries.

In a growing country like Nigeria, with a wide ethnic group of people with diverse perspectives, radio commentary or news talk capable of interpreting events bordering on global and societal issues are vital to the population.
