KNOWLEDGE AND AWARENESS OF THE EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION ON THE HEALTH OF MOTORCYCLE RIDERS
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate motorbike riders’ knowledge and awareness of the effects of air pollution on their health in the Coker/Aguda council development area. The sample comprised of 110 motorbike riders from the Coker/Aguda Local Council Development Area in Lagos State.
The variables investigated are knowledge and awareness of the impact of air pollution on health. A 20-item self-developed questionnaire was used to examine participants’ knowledge and awareness of the effects of air pollution on their health.
The data was analysed using simple percentages. The findings indicate that motorbike riders in the Coker/Aguda Local Council Development Area are knowledgeable about the impact of air pollution on their health.
The study advised that seminars be held on a regular basis to educate motorbike riders on how to create a friendly and enabling environment for decent living, and that law enforcement agencies urge motorbike riders to take Ministry of Transportation tests to avoid air pollution.
The state government could promote nasal plugs to motorcycle riders to prevent respiratory problems, greater research on the effects of air pollution on health, and the use of eye goggles to reduce itching and eye pain.

INTRODUCTION
a. Background of the Study
The soil can be cleansed before we use it, and the water can be purified before we drink it, but, unless we are in air-conditioned rooms, we must breathe the air that comes to us. Automobiles, factories, heating furnaces, power plants, and rubbish incinerators all contribute to the problem, making control difficult. (Source: Microsoft Encarta 2009).
Air pollution is an important environmental issue around the globe. The majority of air pollution concerns are caused by human energy consumption and manufacturing patterns.
Economic activities have an impact on air quality because they introduce pollutants into the atmosphere, endangering human health and other living forms on Earth. It also has the ability to alter the climate, with unpredictable but potentially severe implications on both a local and global scale.
Because vast masses of air cannot be contained, atmospheric pollution can only be regulated where it originates.Currently, there is no comprehensive information on air quality or the levels of emissions entering the environment from various sources.
However, air pollution poses a significant environmental risk to human health. By lowering air pollution levels, we can assist countries lessen the worldwide burden of respiratory illnesses, heart disease, and lung cancer. The population’s respiratory (long- and short-term) and cardiovascular health will improve as air pollution levels in a city decrease.
A pollutant is the wrong thing in the wrong place at the wrong time, and avoiding pollution, especially in affluent countries like ours, is not always straightforward.
The problem is exacerbated by a lack of ownership of the problem; reality gaps between government agencies that must regulate and monitor pollutant averages over time and local citizens who are justifiably upset over local episodes; and entrenchment in the comfort of our own consumptive lifestyles with few alternatives.
