MEDIA AND CREATION OF POLITICAL AWARENESS
Chapter one
Introduction
Background of the Study
Teaching at any local level necessitates that students be exposed to some type of stimulation. Adekunle (2008) defined teaching resources in electrical/electronic as everything that helps the teacher promote teaching and learning. When kids have the opportunity to learn using multiple senses. They can learn more quickly and easily.
The utilisation of instructional material gives teachers with an exciting and compelling flat form for communicating knowledge, which motivates students to learn more. The teacher is supported in overcoming physical obstacles that may have hampered his efficient presentation of the given material.
According to Lone (1994), the use of electronically mediated instruction to replicate the traditional face-to-face classroom has resulted in a transition from teacher to student-centered classes. In this case, pupils assume responsibility for their own learning.
The teacher facilitates learning by serving as a coach, resource guide, and partner in learning. The utilisation of instructional resources encourages teachers and students to collaborate, but it also leads to more cooperative learning activities among students.
Ikerionwu (2000) defined instructional facilities as objects or devices that assist the teacher in making learning meaningful to the students. Similarly, Ezegbe (1994) divided instructional materials into two categories: visual materials, which are made up of reading and non-reading materials, and audiovisual materials, which are made up of electrically operated and non-electrically operated materials.
Electrical/electronics is a trade that is dependent on the use of resources. Osukawe and Itedjere (1991) classified these resources as textual, audiovisual, and non-human resources.
According to Osakwe and Itedjere (1999), these resources can be used individually or collaboratively in any meaningful electrical/electronic teaching and learning situation.
Odunsunya (2003) defines instructional materials in technology education as including all practical and skill development and evaluation of technical skills. In light of modern technological development, “rote” learning in the three domains, as was the case in the passage, should give way to a comprehensive skill development approach.
The goal of instructional materials is to improve educational efficiency by increasing the quality of teaching and learning. Incorporating these tools and materials provides support and reinforces instruction.
According to Aduwa Ogiebaen and Imagie (2005), these materials and resources, which include audio tape recorders, video tape films, trips, maps, charts, graphs, and many others, provide a variety of learning experiences that can be used separately or in combination to fulfil various teaching and learning needs.
Teachers are obligated to use instructional materials in their instruction in order to ensure that learning is more permanent in the mind of the learner.
It is critical that teachers, particularly technical education teachers, use instructional materials that allow students to see, hear, and manipulate, which contributes to effective electrical/electronics teaching and learning in technical colleges.
A good teacher should use his available instructional resources appropriately, as the utilisation of instructional materials in the teaching and learning process is very important at all levels of education.
According to Osuala (2002), the use of instructional materials in teaching technology education courses is critical, as they appeal to and draw the attention of students in the classroom.
Statement of the Problem
According to Aina (2000), performance at national technical certificate (NTC) examinations taken in technical colleges in 2000 produced very disturbing statistics due to their complete disregard, inadequate funding, and insufficient resources.
Poor facility management caused a failure rate ranging from 14% to 48% in the electrical and mechanical trades. Atumbe (2002) stated that due to insufficient finance, typical workshop practices
which make up 60% (standard set by the National Board for Technical Education (NABTEB) of the technical college curriculum, are gradually vanishing from vocational/technical colleges’ timetables.
The purpose of this study was to conduct a survey of the available instructional facilities in order to determine the extent to which it influences the performance of students in the electrical/electronic trade.
Purpose of the Study
The main goal of this study was to find out how instructor of government science technical institutions Kaduna utilize the available instructional resources, notably in teaching electrical/electronics and specifically, the study will determine,
1. If the instructional materials are adequate for teaching of electrical/electronic course in technical colleges in Kaduna state.
2. The extent to which existing instructional facilities are used to teach electrical/electronics courses at a technical institution in Kaduna State.
3. To what extent do electrical and electronics teachers improve the educational material?
Research Questions
The following research questions are developed to lead the study:
1. How adequate are the instructional materials for teaching electrical/electronics in a technical institution in Kaduna State?
2. To what extent are available instructional facilities being used to teach electrical/electronics?
3. To what extent do electrical and electronics teachers modify the educational materials?
Significance of the Study
The study will benefit the following individuals. Students, teachers, school administrators, and the government.
The study’s findings will benefit students by allowing them to learn more effectively and be better equipped.
The school will also benefit from these findings as it works to address the issues that are impeding the utilisation of educational resources.
Furthermore, the findings of this research will be used as a basis for future studies by students and researchers.
The government, on the other hand, will profit greatly from the findings of this research as it plans curricula for vocational and technical education.
Scope of the Study
Because of limited research facilities. The study was done in a government-owned technical college in Kaduna state and was limited to the electrical/electronic trades.
