MOTIVATION AND PERFORMANCE AMONG HEALTH PERSONNEL OF THE INSTITUTE OF HEALTH, AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL (ABUTH), ZARIA
ABSTRACT
The study undertakes a motivational analysis as the major cause of low output, discontent and high labour turnover among the workers of the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH). In the process a number of traditional theories on motivation are examined especially those of Frederick Herzberg and Abraham Maslow. This is done both in attempt to highlight the importance accorded to management problems that arise as a result of insufficient motivation and how these same precepts can be applied to an organizational set up like the teaching hospital (ABUTH). The study also identifies the motivational techniques necessary for improved performance at ABUTH. These are both intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic in that work should be made interesting and challenging so that it yields satisfaction and extrinsic in that adequate rewards and appreciation should be granted for the performance of the required task. It is also realized however that direct application of western motivational techniques poses a very crucial problem in an African context because of the existence of different value systems, economies and political set-up. It is suggested that any attempt to motivate employees in an viii African context should take special care of blending these aspects. The major conclusion reached is that no single theory can account for the improvement of effectiveness and efficiency through motivation in any organization. This is especially so in Nigeria where the variable are so volatile continuous adaptation is required. Therefore different aspects from different theories are recommended according to the internal and external environment that exists at any particular time and place. This is the essence of the systems concept.
