MTN WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE AS TOOL OF SOCIALIZATION AMONG STUDENTS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
There was a need to determine the level of performance of social studies in constitutional matters, specifically the extent of coverage of the national constitution in the social studies curriculum and students’ comprehension. This was in response to the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Babangida’s call for the establishment of a new school subject in the school system called citizenship education.
The new subject has goals that are very similar to those of social studies, and the researcher believes it could be integrated into the social studies curriculum. The study looked at both the social studies curriculum and the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s constitution to see how well the former covered the latter.
However, it was discovered that the coverage was insufficient. Gross (1977), Henning (1973), and Naylor (1977) all agreed on the significance of constitutional and law-focused studios in secondary schools. Katsina State Social Studies students from Junior Secondary Three were used in the studies, which took place in both rural and urban boarding schools.
The study enrolled 637 students, 412 of whom were urban and 225 of whom were rural.
The only instrument used in the study was a validated check-list test created by a teacher. Statistical techniques such as the t-test and chi-square were used to test five null hypotheses.
The general level of awareness of Nigerian constitutional issues among junior secondary school students was found to be encouraging. The mean score difference was found to be statistically significant at the probability level of P.05, so all five postulated null hypotheses were rejected.
However, junior secondary school social studies students at urban boarding schools performed better than those at rural boarding schools.
The study concluded with a call for an immediate review of the Social Studies Curriculum at the Junior Secondary School level, as well as serious attention to rural schools in order to equalize them with urban schools in order to provide students with equal educational opportunities.
