MULTUCULTURALISM: ROOTS AND REALITIES.
Cultural movements and trends that emphasize the richness of American culture and society are known as multiculturalism. This organization’s various initiatives are aimed at encouraging and affirming ethnic minorities’ full participation in American society.
It’s common for them to see the contributions of diverse groups as essential to the country’s economic, social, and cultural well-being. As universities began revising their programs, textbooks, and curricula to reflect a more inclusive view of American culture in the 1980s, multiculturalism began to take shape in higher education.
An academic backlash and the infamous “culture wars” of the 1980s and 1990s would result from this shift in emphasis toward women, minorities, and non-Western texts and perspectives. Critics claimed that multiculturalism promoted factionalism and undermined the foundations of Western culture, while supporters claimed that it advocated tolerance and equal treatment for all peoples of the world.
In any case, the impact of multiculturalism would go far beyond the academic world. That influence would extend to everything from music to food to home décor to literature in the late twentieth century, influencing everything from fashion and advertising to television and even corporate slogans.
