OPEN SOURCE INTELLIGENCE AND COMBATING TERRORISM IN NIGERIA AND APPRAISAL
Chapter One: Introduction
Background of the study
This project focuses on the global subject of terrorism, particularly in Nigeria. We aim to investigate the causes, consequences, and ways to combat them. The method of interest is the utilisation of open source intelligence.
Open-source intelligence (OSINT) is a multi-method (qualitative, quantitative) methodology for gathering, analysing, and making choices regarding data available in publically accessible sources for use in an intelligence setting.
In the intelligence community, the phrase “open” refers to sources that are overtly and publically available. Open Source Intelligence has been present for hundreds of years, going by several names.
With the advent of immediate communication and rapid information transfer, public, unclassified sources now provide a wealth of actionable and predictive intelligence. It is unrelated to open source software or collective intelligence.
Statement of the Research Problem
The issue of terrorism has now become commonplace in our part of the world, and required efforts must be done to address it. We need to evaluate and assess these tactics
particularly the utilisation of open source intelligence, by soliciting the opinions of professionals and individuals directly affected by this epidemic. This initiative would accomplish that while also identifying and recommending areas for improvement.
We would also investigate the many countries that have employed the Open Source Intelligence technique to combat terrorism activities that have occurred in those countries.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS:
The study seeks to address the following research questions:
How does open-source intelligence affect Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts?
How does open source intelligence collection determine the success of Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts?
How does open source intelligence gathering effect Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts?
HYPOTHESES/ASSUMPTIONS
To answer the research issues, the following testable null hypotheses were proposed:
Open source intelligence does not have a big impact on counterterrorism activities.
Open source intelligence effectiveness does not greatly impact success in counter-terrorism efforts.
Open source intelligence has little influence on decision-making in counterterrorism efforts.
GOALS OF THE STUDY
The aims and objectives are:
Taking a broad view of open source intelligence and researching it in depth.
Examining the methodology, scenarios, and the implications for inquiry and intelligence gathering
Using a sample size to investigate the accuracy and efficacy of this intelligence gathering method
Significance of the Study
The study empirically assesses the impact of open source intelligence on Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts. This will help to strengthen public relations with members of the intelligence community.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY:
The study’s scope includes selected Nigerian security and intelligence units, as well as academic research on counterterrorism.
