PROPOSAL ON IMPORTANCE OF RADIO BROADCAST PROGRAMMES IN NIGERIA

Chapter one

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Communication is the process of sending messages from one place to another, and the content of the messages is referred to as information. Information pervades all aspects of existence.

It is a treasure for a country, a community, and the entire planet. Every aspect of life will remain static without well-packaged information. To a considerable extent, information is an asset, resource, or commodity having social, economic, and political implications.

Communication is as old as mankind and serves as the pivot around which human existence, continuity, and national growth revolve. Different media are employed in communication, which are characterised as print (newspapers, magazines, etc.), electronic (radio, television, etc.), and oral (e.g., usage of gongs, etc.).

The electronic media categories are the most visible and significant. They are more recent than oral and print media, having been developed mostly in the twentieth century. Stella Okunna (1987) observed, “Radio appears to be more powerful.”

It distinguishes out for having a higher ability to reach Nigeria’s diverse population.” Radio, as a medium of mass communication, has a broader breadth of coverage and has a bigger impact on the audience due to its widespread use. Okonkwo (1997) defines radio as a mechanical medium of communication with “aural” reception.

Radio uses the senses of sound and hearing to transmit messages to its listeners. It is a faithful comparison anywhere one finds a set to listen to while walking, at work, on the farm, at the market, travelling in a car, on a motorbike, on a donkey and so on.

Radio is widely utilised across the country, including in rural areas. This is due to the medium’s unique characteristics, which include portability, affordability, and ease of operation even in the absence of electricity.

In this study, we set out to investigate the functions that radio programmes play in national development. Nigeria is a massive country fueled by a shared desire to grow and progress. “In dreams,” writes Fred Amadi (1999), “began responsibility.” Radio, the country’s primary media, bears the role of guiding the nation’s people on their developmental journey.

Nigeria is reported to include at least 250 ethnic groups with diverse socio-cultural heritage. This asks for a medium that can cross borders, break through all barriers, and have a developmental impact on the audience, since according to Wilbur Schramm (1994), “for there to be unity and national development, there must be effective communication.”

The objectives of the study

The following objectives will be assessed:

To determine the quality of radio broadcasts in improving the nation.

To determine whether radio broadcast programmes have an influence on their audience.

To determine the importance of radio broadcast programmes in Nigeria.

Research Hypotheses

H1: The quality of radio broadcasting stations’ programmes does not contribute to national development.

H0: The quality of the programmes provided by the radio broadcast station contributes to the nation’s development.

H2: Radio broadcast programmes have little effect on their listeners.

H0: Radio broadcast programmes have an effect on their audience.

H3: Radio broadcasting has no importance in Nigeria.

H0: The relevance of radio broadcasting in Nigeria
