ROLE OF MASS MEDIA IN CURBING THE SPREAD OF CORONA VIRUS PANDEMIC IN NIGERIA

Chapter one

Introduction

Background of the study:
The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has triggered a global health catastrophe that has had a significant impact on how we perceive our planet and our daily lives.

Not only does the rate of infection and patterns of transmission endanger our sense of agency, but the safety measures put in place to contain the virus necessitate social separation by refraining from doing what is naturally human, which is to seek solace in the company of others.

In the context of physical threat, social and physical separation, and public alarm, what role have (and may) the various mass media outlets played in our lives on an individual, social, and societal level?

Mass media has long been recognised as major influences on how we perceive the world and ourselves. This recognition is accompanied by an increasing volume of research that closely follows technological transformations (e.g., radio, movies, television, the internet, mobiles) and the zeitgeist (e.g., cold war, 9/11, climate change) in an attempt to map mass media’s major impacts on how we perceive ourselves, both as individuals and citizens.

The sensitization and awareness campaign aimed to educate the public about COVID-19, its symptoms, repercussions, and prevention techniques.

The media, particularly social media, radio, and television, is used as a valuable tool for raising awareness and providing COVID-19 health education. Although other researchers suggested that social media is only for the educated.

To raise awareness about Covid-19 in rural communities, the Nigerian government used media institutions in addition to other traditional methods of social mobilisation. These organisations, particularly television and radio stations, embraced native vernacular or language as their mode of communication.

statement of the problem

Is it still possible for media (both broadcast and digital) to transmit a feeling of oneness to huge audiences, or are messages lost in the noise of mass self-communication?

Do social media platforms offer comfort or serve as a breeding ground for disinformation, (de)humanization, and discrimination?

Can we use the adaptability and ubiquity of media technologies to enhance public adherence to the safety precautions recommended by global health organisations to combat COVID-19?

How can various media industries and mass communication platforms encourage adaptive responses that promote positive health attitudes and adherence to preventative measures?

How do media affect private-sector dynamics (for example, strengthening family relationships versus domestic strife and violence)?

The study aims to

The aims of the study are:

To determine the role of mass media in preventing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria.

To determine if the media campaign established a reasonable degree of mass media awareness of the COVID-19 epidemic, its causes, effects, and prevention in Nigeria

To determine the association between mass media and COVID-19 sensitising awareness.

research hypotheses

The following have been submitted for testing:

H0: mass media has no influence in reducing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria.

H1: Mass media plays a role in slowing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria.

H0: There is no association between mass media and COVID-19 sensitising awareness.

H1: There is a relationship between mass media and COVID-19 sensitising awareness.

The significance of the study

This study will be critical for investors, the government, and scholars since it will provide policy suggestions to various Nigeria stakeholders for implementing appropriate actions in the broadcasting industry to accelerate capacity investment.

The changing character of the broadcasting industry, particularly television station reforms such as the licencing of online radio and television stations, has had an impact on the industry in recent years and will drive studies on the perception of mass media as tools for sensitising rural dwellers about infectious epidemics to new evidence.

It will add to the existing body of literature on the subject. This study will benefit: The Academia: Members of the academia will find the study relevant because it will serve as a foundation for future research and a reference tool for academic works.

Government: This study will expose to the government what is happening in the broadcasting business. The formulation and execution of policies based on these findings will secure the industry’s development.

The scope and limitations of the study

The study’s focus includes the effect of mass media in preventing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria. The researcher encountered some constraints that limited the scope of the study;

a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The researcher’s access to research material is insufficient, which limits the investigation.

b) TIME: The study’s time frame does not allow for broader coverage because the researcher must balance other academic activities and exams with the study.

1.7 Defined Terms

An epidemic is the widespread incidence of an infectious disease in a community at a specific moment.

Disease: a structural or functional abnormality in a human, animal, or plant, particularly one that causes specific symptoms or affects a specific place and is not just the result of physical injury.

Infectious: (of a disease or disease-causing organism) capable of spreading to humans, other creatures, and so on through the environment.

The term “mass media” refers to a wide range of mass technologies that communicate with a broad audience.
