Sustainable Consumption And The Importance Of Neighbourhood.
ABSTRACT
This research uses urban and environmental sociological theories to collect survey data on self-reported sustainable consumption patterns from a matched sample of Edmonton, Alberta, inhabitants.
We utilise cluster analysis to generate an ordinal typology of four sorts of consumers, then conduct variance analyses to characterise the resulting clusters, and last use logistic regression to estimate the net effect of urban and neighbourhood context on sustainable consumption patterns.
We discovered that neighbourhood and environmental attitudes are the best indicators of sustainable consumption practices. We conclude by claiming that many sustainable activities are more difficult to include into daily routines when living in a suburban neighbourhood.
While suburban inhabitants may strongly believe that they should consume less, their geographical position appears to limit their capacity to drastically cut their personal consumption.
This urban Canadian case study has ramifications for middle-class environmental habits in other North American cities and suburbs.
