Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

According to Andrejevic (2008), television is a popular and effective means of distributing information, with a substantial impact on people’s lives all over the world. Many people rely heavily on television for information and enjoyment.

It allows them to see people, places, and things that they might not have seen previously. In an increasingly globalised culture, television influences people’s perceptions of the world.

A reality show is a television programme that attempts to illustrate how ordinary people behave in everyday situations or in settings that are frequently constructed by the show’s creators and intended to mimic normal life.

A reality show may also be defined as a television show in which ordinary people or celebrities are captured going about their daily lives or performing specified tasks.

It’s worth emphasising that most reality television shows have a substantial impact on the most vulnerable demographic, teenagers (Andrejevic, 2008).

According to Vijaykumar (2012), the World Health Organisation (WHO) defines an adolescent as a person aged 10 to 19. Adolescence is also defined as the phase of growth and development that takes place between childhood and adulthood. This is the age at which a young boy or girl reaches adulthood.

Adolescents start using abstract reasoning to justify their activities as early as puberty. Post-conventional morality is founded on self-selected ethical principles that are usually wide and universal, such as justice, dignity, and equality.

Mckay (2010). According to Vijaykumar (2012), teenagers easily align or identify with their culture, with what they see at home and around them, at school, and in the media.

These observations influence their moral reasoning and behaviour. When children are young, their family, culture, and religion have a large influence on their moral decisions. During the early adolescent years, teenage pressure has a stronger influence than we would want to admit.

Adolescence is a period in which young adults seek to identify with persons whom they believe to be friendly, trustworthy, and reliable. At this age, some adolescents prefer to withdraw from their parents, experience a sense of belonging with specific people, and readily accept or adapt to things that are regularly shown to them.

Reality television is an important aspect of television viewing culture. Many people understand that not everything is “real” in the realm of reality TV, but most adolescents and teenagers do not.

1.2 Statement of the Study

Unfortunately, some adolescents’ life circumstances may interfere with their moral growth, and reality television brings this closer to them.

Reality television shows have a significant impact on people’s attitudes, beliefs, self-image, and behaviour. Vijaykumar stated in 2012 that this is a major worry because the prevalent themes in most Reality Television shows aired are sex appeal, physical beauty, excessive and aggressive partying, materialism, lack of attention on important things, violence, bullying, and so on.

This is because, at this point in their lives, their friends are the most important people to them, and the need to impress and “feel among” them is intense.

However, how do the most vulnerable group of individuals, teens, perceive the world of reality television? What could reality TV be teaching adolescent boys and girls, in particular, about the importance of purposeful morality? This study is therefore necessary.

1.3 GOALS OF THE STUDY

The primary goal of the research is to examine the effects of television reality programmes on the moral and social lives of adolescents. Other aims of this investigation include:

To assess the impact of television reality shows on adolescents’ moral and social lives.

To assess the impact of reality television shows on adolescents’ moral and social lives.

iii. Identify the essential strategies to reduce the consequences of social media use on adolescents‘ moral and social lives.
