THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SCHOOL FACILITIES AND STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN SELECTED PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS

 

ABSTRACT

The study attempted to investigate the relationship between school facilities and student performance in a sample of Lagos State public secondary schools. In this study, a review of relevant related literature was conducted under subheadings.

The research survey design was used to assess respondents’ opinions through the use of a questionnaire and a sampling technique.

The study sampled a total of 120 (one hundred and twenty) respondents. In this study, two null hypotheses were developed and tested, using the independent t-test for hypotheses one and three, and the pearson product moment coefficient statistical tool at the 0.05 level of significance for hypotheses two and three.

The following findings emerged from the analysis:

(1) Hypothesis one revealed that there is a significant relationship between school facilities and students’ academic performance.

(2) Hypothesis two discovered a significant difference in academic performance between students who attended schools with facilities and those who did not attend schools with facilities.

 

INTRODUCTION

1.0 The Study’s Background

A facility is a system that allows an organization or institution to carry out its daily operations while also promoting growth and development in that organization or institution.

The term “facility” refers to the entire environment of a school or organization, including both physical and material resources available to students and teachers in order to facilitate their learning and teaching processes. The three main areas of facilities identified in the school system or environment are classrooms, libraries, and science laboratories. Onyeji (1990)

According to Yeloye (1990), in terms of the availability of libraries as a school facility, many of our secondary schools do not have functional libraries, and where libraries are found, there are no new or current books that are relevant to the current secondary school programs. In practice, most secondary schools in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos State, lack library facilities.

The library’s significance and utility cannot be overstated. Libraries and books are extremely beneficial to both teachers and students. In a situation where our secondary school students are forced to rely solely on their text books for information, the risk of exposing them to obsolete knowledge in old books donated by the British Council several years ago, as is common in old secondary schools, should not be underestimated.

According to Dada (1994), anyone who is familiar with secondary school classrooms in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos State, will agree that no meaningful teaching/learning activities can take place in most of them, even if the teachers are God-sent and the students are a celestial pack of highly intelligent personalities.

The problem is that where there are classrooms, they are overcrowded to the point where rooms originally meant for 30 to 40 students, take a total of 60 students. In this situation, neither the teacher nor the students have the freedom of movement that is expected in our secondary school classrooms. As a result, many teachers do not assign assignments to as many students as they should. And this has had a significant impact on students’ academic performance.

Olarewaju (1994) claims that only a few schools have science laboratories that are adequately equipped to conduct scientific experiments in courses such as biology, physics, and chemistry. Many schools teach biology and chemistry as if they were non-science subjects with no laboratory.

Some other schools, which are so during, teach the three branches of science without laboratories in the hope that they will use other schools’ laboratories during their exams or compel students to contribute money to the purchase of science equipment through the school Parents Teachers Association (PTA).

It should be noted that science has a higher failure rate because our schools do not teach students the necessary science and instead rely on theoretical science without the use of laboratories. The argument is that the country has been unjust not only to our secondary school students, but also to herself.

This is because no nation can develop technology through theoretical teaching of science subjects, no meaningful teaching and learning can take place in inadequate educational facilities, and the common refrain in the educational circle is that all is well with our secondary schools.

1.1Theoretical Statements of the Problem

The significance of school amenities in the development and growth of the educational sector cannot be overstated. Many schools in Nigeria today lack certain school facilities that can make teaching and learning easier and more enjoyable for both teachers and students.

Often, there has been a constant outcry of inadequate provision or non-provision of school facilities, particularly laboratories, classrooms (buildings), and libraries, which are the main school facilities that aid the teaching and learning process. For example, due to a lack of necessary equipment in the school, teachers in the science fields find it difficult to experiment and carry out practical teaching in the school, and the resultant effect is that m

Year after year, students’ academic performance in arts and science courses continued to decline due to a lack of libraries and sufficient classrooms in the school.

This is due to teachers’ inability to use instructional materials to present their teaching thoroughly for the students’ better understanding. In fact, the investigation of this study was prompted by the inadequate provision or non-availability of school facilities in our secondary schools.

1.2The Study’s Purpose

The primary goal of this study is to investigate the relationship between school facilities and students’ academic performance in a sample of secondary schools in Lagos State’s Mushin Local Government Area. The study’s other goals are as follows:

(1) Determine whether there is a link between school facilities and student academic performance.

(2) To determine whether adequate facilities are provided in our secondary schools.

(3) To identify the causes of inadequate school facility provision in our secondary schools.

(4) To propose solutions to the problem of inadequate secondary school facility provision.

 

1.3Research Issues

For the study, these research questions were posed.

(1) Is there a link between school facilities and student academic performance?

(2) Are our secondary schools’ facilities adequate or insufficient?

(3) How can we identify the causes of inadequate facility provision in our schools?

(4) To what extent can the problems of inadequate school facilities be resolved?

 

1.4Analysis of Research Hypotheses

For the study, the following hypotheses were developed:

(1) There will be no significant relationship between school facilities and student academic performance.

(2) There will be no significant difference in academic performance between students who attended schools with facilities and those who attended schools without facilities.

 

1.5The Study’s Importance

The following people will benefit from this research:

(1) It is hoped that students will benefit from this study because they will gain a better understanding of how the lack of infrastructure in secondary schools will affect their academic performance.

(2) It is hoped that the study will help teachers accept the fact that providing adequate infrastructure will help both students and teachers to facilitate the teaching and learning processes.

(3) The findings and recommendations of this study would be used by school authorities to solve the problem of inadequate infrastructure provision in our secondary schools. They would gain a better understanding of the impact of inadequate infrastructure provision in our schools on teachers’ work performance and students’ academic performance as a result of this study.

(4) It would be beneficial to parents because it would allow them to understand the impact of inadequate infrastructure on both students’ and teachers’ academic and work performance.

With the study’s findings and recommendations, parents will be able to assist school authorities in finding long-term solutions to the problem of inadequate infrastructure provision in our schools.

(5) The study will benefit society because when adequate infrastructure is provided in schools, teachers will work harder to produce a better crop of students for the society.

 

1.6The Study’s Scope and Limitations

The research will look at the link between school facilities and student academic performance in Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State. The study was hampered by a lack of good materials for the literature review and other information collection.
