ABSTRACT
Prior until 1861, when Britain annexed Lagos, traditional rulers ruled over what is now Nigeria. There is little doubt that traditional rulers in Nigeria have seen their powers erode.
This political landscape has sparked several debates among stakeholders and traditional rulers about their respective roles and relevance in the growing political setup.
On this basis, this research may be opportune and required to re-examine the role of traditional rulers in local government administration, with special reference to the Ozoro Kingdom in Delta State’s Isoko North Local Government Area.
Traditional institutions and rulers in Nigeria have suffered greatly as a result of colonial control, revolution, conflicts, and post-independence political growth.
As previously said, traditional rulers were both the political, social, cultural, and economic administrators of their respective communities before to the introduction of colonialism.
They were a component of the unchangeable African culture that preserved social peace and stability. However, when colonial power was imposed on African societies,
of which Nigeria is a part, the situation altered. During this time, Traditional Rulers were subservient and were instrumental in achieving the goals of the indirect rule system.
