UNNATURAL HISTORY OF NATURAL DISASTER IN NIGERIA.
ABSTRACT
With the exception of 9/11, the top 10 most expensive disasters in US history have all been natural disasters, five of which were hurricanes, and they have all occurred since 1989. Why is this terrible plague invading our homes?
According to environmental historian Ted Steinberg’s book Acts of God, much of the death and destruction has been under human control. Natural Disaster Steinberg illustrates the error of seeing such disasters as just random phenomena.
Beginning with the 1886 Charleston and 1906 San Francisco earthquakes and continuing to the present day, Steinberg investigates the unnatural history of natural disasters
as well as the decisions of business leaders and government officials that have paved the way for greater losses of life and property, particularly among those least able to withstand such blows–America’s poor, elderly, and minorities.
Natural disaster. Steinberg contends that blaming nature or God has helped to obscure the truth that certain Americans are better protected from natural violence than their counterparts further down the socioeconomic ladder.
Natural disaster. Acts of God is a must-read exhortation to action that will undoubtedly spark debate. “A sobering lesson in humanity’s vulnerability to extreme climatic events, especially the impoverished farmer and the urban poor.”-The LA Times Book Review. Natural disaster.
